The Access Credit Card: Payment Protection Insurance (PPI)

PPI Claims

I've had a few enquiries with respect to PPI claims against old policies that were taken out to cover Access credit cards. Whilst this site bears no affiliation whatsoever to MasterCard (the current holders of the Access brand name), or to any of the banks that issued Access credit cards, I may be able to offer some advice to stop any wild goose chases.

First of all, Access was simply a card brand - so you never actually did business with Access. You were doing business with a bank that supplied credit cards with the Access brand on them. In essence, all Access cards issued after 1973 were MasterCard plastics, but in the early days, the UK-centric Access brand had dominance over the MasterCard brand (and its predecessors, the Master Charge or Interbank brands).

Even when MasterCard was the dominant logo on these cards, you were actually in a credit agreement with an issuing bank, and not MasterCard - so the thing to work out here is just which bank operated your 'Access' card. Something else you should bear in mind is that Access as a brand disappeared from the marketplace in the mid-1990s. So it could be a very old claim, in which case, the likelihood of resolution is low. For starters, the bank is under no legal obligation to retain financial records for any more than six years - so they will likely have no evidence of your payments (of course, if you have your own old statements it will help). Furthermore, it will be difficult to prove things like misselling from so long ago.

If you do wish to discuss a claim, then the author of this website would advise you to firstly contact the bank directly, rather than going via a PPI claims company. These companies are often encouraging cardholders to make false claims, which ultimately is delaying the whole process, and simply swallowing up PPI money that should be going to legitimate claimants to right the wrongdoings of the past. In addition to that, of course, these Claims Management Companies simply want a cut of the money that is rightly yours!
